Valentine Willie Fine Art is pleased to announce Tukar Ganti, a survey of new Malaysian paintings. Tukar Ganti takes a closer look at eight mid-career Malaysian painters in their attempt at reinventing and reasserting the importance of the medium in contemporary art discourse.
The title of the show playfully suggests, in the Malay language, notion of change and replacement. While it broadly hints at the political 'wave' that has beset Malaysia in recent times, the exhibition hones in on the development of new painterly forms by a generation of artists that has expanded their vocabulary to explore the problematics of painting.
If Malaysian art in the nineties marked the return of figurative painting, this new generation of artists have increasingly looked beyond the confines of the Malaysian subject, instead they turn to explore the means of painting, finding new forms to understand and respond to the significant shift in the country's pattern of thinking in culture, aesthetics, and social history.
